Mark your calendars: June 1 on Pluto
On the surface, Dungeons & Dragons and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles don’t seem to have a ton in common. One is a fantasy role-playing game dating back to the ‘70s focused on magic, wizards, and mythical beasts. Meanwhile the other was born as a comic in the ‘80s about walking, talking, butt-kicking anthropomorphic turtles. The only thing I can think of is that I’m pretty sure Donatello would be a D&D guy.
That and, soon, two of the best adaptations of both of those properties will be available to stream for free.
Beginning June 1, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem will be available on the totally free (with ads) streaming service Pluto TV.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is a 2023 film about a gang of miscreants going on a quest for a lost relic. It managed to exceed expectations of critics and the D&D fandom by infusing the property with humor and fun characters. Also, the idea of turning a fantasy movie into a heist film made for a really entertaining story.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem was the first time these teenage characters were played by actual teenagers and you can feel that from the very start of the movie as the turtles really seemed like kids for the first time ever. That choice, combined with an interesting, sketchy art style that looked more like concept art than an overly-polished animated film, made for something truly unique in TMNT history.
Now that I think of it, it’d be really entertaining to see the Mutant Mayhem Turtles play a game of D&D. But until that happens, watching these two awesome movies together would make for a pretty great, and soon totally free, double feature.
