Following Sony’s carefully worded PlayStation Plus price increase announcement earlier this week, the company has confirmed what everybody already expected but what it hadn’t yet said out loud: it’s not just PS Plus Essential going up in price; Premium and Extra are now more expensive too.
On Monday, Sony announced a PlayStation Plus price bump for new customers, coming into effect on 20th May, which it blamed on “ongoing market conditions”. At the time, however, it only explicitly outlined new pricing details for the subscription service’s lowest tier. Specifically, it said prices would rise, “starting at” £7.99 / $10.99 USD / €9.99 EUR for one-month subscriptions (a £1 increase) while three-month subscription would increase by £2 to £21.99 GBP/ €27.99 EUR / $27.99 USD.
The phrasing of the announcement – specifically the words “starting at” – suggested the price boost could well be reflected in higher tiers, but Sony simply reiterated the price for new customers in the UK would “start at £7.99 for a one-month subscription and 21.99 for a three-month subscription, when approached to provide clarification by Eurogamer.
Now, however, with the price increases now live for new customers, it’s clear the bump applies to all three PlayStation Plus tiers. A PlayStation Plus Extra subscription now costs £11.99 / $16.99 for a month and £34.99 / $43.99 for three months, while a Premium subscription rises to £14.99 / $19.99 for one month and £43.99 / $54.99 for three. Annual subscriptions, which received a price increase of their own back in 2023 are unaffected for now.
News of a PlayStation Plus price hike follows Sony’s decision to significantly raise the cost of its PlayStation hardware earlier this year, with the base PS5 seeing a price bump of £90 in the UK. At the time, it blamed the move on “continued pressures in the global economic landscape”.
