March 2026 Was A Huge Month For Console Sales In The US

Circana’s latest monthly sales report revealed that not only was spending on software up year-over-year, but spending on hardware grew as well.

Sales of gaming hardware in the US during March 2026 rose by 69% compared to March 2025, reaching $500 million. Circana said the Switch 2 “drove the overall gain” for March 2026, with spending on PlayStation 5 increasing by 3% compared to March 2025. The report had no data about Xbox.

The Switch 2 was the best-selling console platform in the US for units sold and dollars for March 2026 and the year so far, with the PS5 coming in second for March 2026 and year-to-date.

What’s more, Circana said the Switch 2 continues to pace ahead of the Switch 1. Over each console’s first 10 months on the market, Switch 2 sales in the US are pacing 12% ahead of Switch 1. Importantly, the 10th month in market for the OG Switch was December 2017, and that month no doubt benefitted from holiday sales. Through nine months, the Switch 2 was pacing 45% ahead of the Switch 1.

For the year so far, total spending on gaming hardware reached $1.074 billion, which was up a significant 37% from $777 million during the same year-to-date period last year.

Data for April will be published in May, but we do already know that spending on PS5 systems specifically surged in early April, as people rushed to buy a system before the price hike.

In terms of game sales in April, MLB The Show 26 ranked No. 1, with Resident Evil Requiem, WWE 2K26, Marathon, and Pokemon Pokopia rounding out the top five for the month. For 2026 so far, Resident Evil Requiem remains the No. 1 best-selling game.
