DC Studios has found its Maxima. Adria Arjona, who was on a shortlist of four actors DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn had put together for the role, has won the day, and will now appear in 2027 Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow.
Variety, which reported the news, said Arjona tested for Maxima alongside Eva De Dominici (The Cleaning Lady), Alien: Earth star Sydney Chandler, and The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox actor Grace Van Patten. Adria Arjona is perhaps best known for playing Bix Caleen in Star Wars show Andor.
Maxima made her debut in 1989’s Action Comics number 645. In that story, the super powerful alien warrior queen from the planet Almerac comes to Earth looking for Superman. In their culture, the ruling family would breed with the strongest of their subjects, usually from a different species, in order to enhance their bloodline. The time had come for Maxima to seek a mate worthy of her interest, and she identifies Superman as fitting the bill. Eventually, Maxima becomes a superheroine of sorts and a member of the Justice League. Maxima was played by Charlotte Sullivan in Smallville, and Eve Torres Gracie in Supergirl.
Arjona joins returning stars David Corenswet as Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and the rest of the Justice League members we saw in last year’s DC Universe kickstarter. Lars Eidinger plays Brainiac, with Lanterns star Aaron Pierre also due to appear.
Ahead of Man of Tomorrow’s release on July 9, 2027, DC Studios will release Supergirl this summer, and Clayface in October.
