Akamatsu began penning the action comedy light novel under the MF Bunko J imprint in August 2008, featuring illustrations by Kobuichi (Kore wa Zombie desu ka?). Kadokawa published the 44th volume in December 2025. Hidan no Aria has a cumulative 9 million copies of its volumes in circulation.
J.C.Staff adapted the light novel into a 12-episode television anime in Spring 2011, covering the first three volumes. The seventh Blu-ray and DVD volume included a special episode in December 2011.
Doga Kobo produced the 12-episode Hidan no Aria AA (Aria the Scarlet Ammo AA) television anime adapting Akamatsu and Shogako Tachibana’s spin-off manga in Fall 2015.
