You wouldn’t expect this survival game to be one of the best-selling games of all time

2D survival crafting game Terraria celebrated its 15th anniversary on May 16, and developer Re-Logic revealed some impressive sales figures to mark the occasion.

The Steam post about the anniversary confirmed that Terraria has sold 70 million copies. 39.6 million of those copies sold were on Steam alone. The console versions have sold a combined 10.7 million copies, while 19.7 million copies have been sold on mobile. Re-Logic estimates that around 461,000 people play the game on PC each day, with the average playtime of all Terraria players being a whopping 101 hours and 18 minutes.

Re-Logic also revealed that its modding community is bigger than the player base of many other games. The open-source tModLoader, which enables modding, has been downloaded 12.3 million times on Steam, and around 237,000 people play Terraria with mods every day. That’s a little over half its current daily player count.

While Terraria may be a fairly unassuming game on the surface, these impressive sales numbers rival industry juggernauts. It has outsold games like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Pokémon Red & Blue, and only slightly trails behind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It’s not the most popular survival game ever, though, as that honor still goes to Minecraft. Perhaps that’s why it’s a bit shocking to learn just how popular Terraria is.

Other exciting announcements for the game were also made on its anniversary. In terms of imminent updates, Re-Logic says players can expect Update 1.4.6 to add cross-play soon, while more content updates are planned beyond that.

A special physical collector’s edition is planned for the anniversary and will be fully revealed in June. Finally, Re-Logic worked with Lost In Cult to create a book about the game’s development, titled Terraria: Design Works. It will be available for pre-order at 1 p.m. EST on May 28.

If you’re not one of the 70 million people who have bought Terraria, it’s available on Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS3, PS4, PS Vita, and Xbox One.
