This fall’s Reality Fracture set for Magic: The Gathering will mark the end of a multi-year storyline, and a fresh batch of leaks seem to confirm a major narrative twist that’s coming to the game.
Someone posted three leaked images of Magic cards they supposedly saw on Discord to the MTG Rumors subreddit on Monday. One image is of a Stingcaster Mage, a 2/1 red creature that costs two mana with haste and the ability to give a single instant or sorcery in the player’s graveyard flashback. It’s a clear riff on the Snapcaster Mage, which is essentially the same card but blue with flash instead of haste.
The leak also includes a reprint of the classic Planeswalker card Chandra, Torch of Defiance and, more importantly, another color-shifted version of Chandra that’s blue called Chandra, Chill of Compliance. The overall structure of the two cards is very similar, but the alt version leans into blue mechanics like surveil, draw, and stun counters as opposed to the direct damage typical of red.
As of this writing, Wizards of the Coast has yet to reply to Polygon’s request for comment regarding the leaks, so we have to remain skeptical here. Longstanding rumors have indicated that Reality Fracture’s story will introduce a parallel universe in which various Magic characters appear as inverted versions of themselves. So did someone fabricate believable fake cards based on previous leaks and rumors? Or are these indeed legitimate?
It all goes back to reports of a November 2024 player survey which teased that the Planeswalker Jace Beleren had become the architect of a “twisted new reality” where “dystopian mirror reflections of familiar characters” appeared.
“What if Chandra were a cold and calculating ice mage instead of the defiant fire mage we know and love?” one redditor wrote of the survey. “Or, what if Liliana had dedicated herself to the healing arts rather than her signature necromancy?”
This leaked Chandra card certainly aligns with what was presented in the survey, but the alt version of Liliana is already canon. A “white-clad” version of Liliana appeared at the end of the last Lorwyn Eclipsed short story, and then Liliana seemingly went missing.
The 2024 survey also included a placeholder creature with art of the white-clad Liliana with what looks like fractured pieces of glass. On the shards, we see regular Liliana. In the background, it’s the white version. In the new leaks, that same fractured approach to the art is applied to the Stingcaster Mage with the shards clearly depicting a version of the original Snapcaster Mage art from Volkan Baga, complete with pointy pieces of shoulder pauldron armor and a bulky blue arm cannon. Which is to say that these leaks are starting to look more and more believable.
Most of the fan chatter surrounding these leaked images indicates that players seem to think they’re real. Even if they’re not at face value, it seems all but certain that cards like these featuring color-shifted variants on beloved Planeswalkers and other classic cards will be featured when Reality Fracture is released on October 2, 2026.
