The new trailer for this fall’s Street Fighter film is now out, but don’t let that distract you from the fact that some weird shit is going down in the latest game. On Wednesday, Capcom rolled out an update to address a creepy and uncomfortable incest storyline in Street Fighter 6, but the patch didn’t really change much.
Last month, a new DLC fighter was added to Street Fighter 6, Alex. Upon finishing World Tour mode with Alex, players get an overview of what he’s been up to lately, which includes marrying his younger adoptive sister/second cousin, Patricia. They’re also expecting a baby. At the time, director Takayuki Nakayama said on X that the team “plan[s] to revise certain text passages that may have been misleading in the near future.”
Capcom’s patch notes for the new update don’t get into the specifics of the changes. They just say, “Some of Alex’s World Tour story text has been adjusted in certain languages.” Instead, players on Reddit have pointed out a change to Alex and Patricia’s storyline, and the story doesn’t seem to have been altered much. They still grew up together, and Alex’s father-in-law and adoptive dad is still related to Alex’s mom.
The change is that now Alex refers to Patricia’s father, Tom, as “a distant relative of my mom or something, and was a sparring buddy of my dad.”
Instead of scrapping the marriage and pregnancy, overhauling Alex and Patricia’s backstory to put some distance between them, or making clear there’s no blood relation between Alex’s mom and his adoptive dad, Capcom opted to keep the gist of the storyline in place. The publisher is trying to obfuscate Alex’s background a bit while doubling down on the weirdest parts of this whole mess.
“And they didn’t change anything else? Jesus, dude. They really do want this,” one user says. “They’re hoping that ‘Or something’ does A LOT of heavy lifting,” another points out.
It’ll be interesting to see if Capcom makes any further alterations to Alex and Patricia’s story, though that seems unlikely at this point. At least the upcoming Street Fighter film looks fun and incest-free.
