HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV series has yet to air — the show premieres in December — but the creative team is already undergoing its first major recasting.
According to a report from Deadline, actress Gracie Cochrane will not return as Ginny Weasley in season 2 of the series “due to unforeseen circumstances.” HBO confirmed the departure in a statement shared with the outlet while wishing Cochrane the best moving forward.
“Due to unforeseen circumstances Gracie has made the challenging decision to step away from her role as Ginny Weasley in the HBO Harry Potter series after season one,” her family said in a statement. “Her time as part of the Harry Potter world has been truly wonderful, and she is deeply grateful to Lucy Bevan and the entire production team for creating such an unforgettable experience. Gracie is very excited about the opportunities her future holds.”
The timing is especially notable considering Ginny Weasley’s rapidly expanding role in the series. Season 1 of the show covers the entirety of the first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, in which Ginny only appears as a background character at both the beginning and end of the book (specifically, we meet her at King’s Cross Station as students leave for and return from Hogwarts). She’s one year younger than Harry Potter and her older brother Ron Weasley, so she isn’t able to attend Hogwarts until the second book. In all likelihood, that translates to about two total scenes in the first season of the new show.
HBO’s Harry Potter TV show has found its Harry, Hermione, and Ron
And now the magical adventure truly begins.
Fans no doubt remember, however, that in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Ginny is positioned as the emotional center of the story as the victim of Tom Riddle’s magical diary — an item revealed much later in the series to be one of Voldemort’s Horcruxes. That means whoever plays Ginny in season 2 will have a substantially greater workload, which can be a challenge for any young actor.
Ginny is also one of the franchise’s most heavily scrutinized characters among longtime fans, many of whom felt the original film series underused her role compared to the books, which is particularly notable considering the fact that she and Harry go on to get married as adults. Whoever HBO casts next will likely face immediate attention as the reboot moves into one of the series’ most Ginny-focused storylines. All of that is on top of what being in a Harry Potter show in the year 2026 ultimately means; even years after his time on the series, Daniel Radcliffe still finds himself apologizing for author J.K. Rowling’s online behavior. That’s a lot for anyone, adult or kid.
The new Harry Potter adaptation was renewed for a second season earlier in May. Season 1 is currently expected to premiere on Christmas Day on HBO Max.
