The license to kill just got shared everywhere
A security flaw in the Indonesian Game Rating System (IGRS) was discovered over the weekend, leading to footage from several video game titles — including IO Interactive’s upcoming James Bond game, 007: First Light — being leaked online.
IGRS assigns age ratings for games developed or published in Indonesia, as well as imported titles, so they can be approved for sale in the country. To ensure the rating is correct, video game companies submit content (including footage) they believe is relevant to the game’s rating. This explains how the security breach led to clips from First Light (including endgame footage) being shared online.
According to VGC, the security flaw concerns several other games, including Bandai Namco’s Echoes of Aincrad, along with thousands of game developers’ emails.
First Light is IO’s chance to put its own mark on the James Bond IP by telling a story of a Bond that we’ve never seen before: a charming but brash young man who is eager to prove himself. To see leaks of First Light’s endgame circulating among gamers must no doubt be disappointing for the developer, especially since the game was originally set to debut in March this year but was pushed to May in late December.
Leaks are an unfortunate part of the games industry, and happen far more often than you might think. Details about games like The Witcher 3 and Grand Theft Auto 6 were leaked before they were even revealed, with the latter having in-development clips shared online while fans are still wondering when this massively anticipated title will actually be released.
Fans won’t have to wait that long before they can play Bond’s origin story, with First Light debuting on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5 on May 27. 007: First Light will also release on the Nintendo Switch 2 at a later date.
