Many moons ago, aka back in the olden days of 1995 until 2019, E3 was the biggest gaming event of the year. Every publisher under the sun would show off their upcoming games. Summer Game Fest, Geoff Keighley’s week-long parade of showcases, has replaced it in some ways, partnering with PlayStation, Xbox, and even Nintendo, so all the reveals happen in the same week. These shows feature some of the biggest games in the world, including Marvel’s Wolverine, Control Resonant, and Fable.
So where was Grand Theft Auto 6, the one game that everyone has their eye on in November, so much so that other games are either delaying their release date or bringing it forward in order to avoid clashing with it?
At E3 2014, Rockstar Games debuted Grand Theft Auto 5 during Sony’s press conference, showing off the enhanced edition of the record-breaking game that would be coming to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The company announced Grand Theft Auto 4 for the first time during Xbox’s E3 2006 presentation, where then-CEO Peter Moore revealed a temporary tattoo of the logo on his arm. It was also featured during the publisher’s 2007 presentation, with Moore introducing it as “one of the most popular and groundbreaking franchises of all time.” Grand Theft Auto: Vice City was officially revealed during E3 2002, and San Andreas had plenty of new details on display at E3 2004.
It’s safe to say that the series has a history of taking center stage during the biggest gaming event of the year. However, with Summer Game Fest 2026 drawing to a close, it’s a fair question to wonder why GTA 6 didn’t show up, because it’s scheduled to release in just five short months, on Nov. 19.
Why wasn’t GTA 6 at SGF 2026?
There’s one fairly simple answer to explain the game’s absence: Rockstar Games does not need the Summer Game Fest platform to bring attention to GTA 6. It is already going to be the biggest release of the year, most likely the generation, and quite possibly of all time. Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive know that the game they have spent the best part of a decade making will command vast swaths of attention, whether it’s part of a larger showcase or not.
Grand Theft Auto 6 surprisingly not delayed
Take-Two confirmed that 2026 launch is still on ahead of the company’s annual earnings call
One might assume its absence signals another delay is imminent or that the game is in bad shape, but that’s highly unlikely to be the case. Ahead of an earnings call in May 2026, Take-Two Interactive CEO, Strauss Zelnick, confirmed the Nov. 19 release date is still on track: “Our Fiscal 2026 performance was exceptional and exceeded our initial expectations at every label. We believe Fiscal 2027 will establish new record levels of operating performance driven by the Nov. 19 launch of Grand Theft Auto 6, along with strong execution across our portfolio.”
We are expecting the third trailer for GTA 6 to drop at some point within the next month or two, because Zelnick also explained that the big marketing push for the game wouldn’t begin until the summer, which officially begins on June 21. Not too much longer to wait, now.
Whenever the trailer does drop, expect to see pre-orders go live at around the same time, which will also confirm exactly how much the game will cost. There’s a strong chance GTA 6 raises the pricing standard for AAA games globally, with one analyst suggesting $80 would be “healthy” for the video game industry. The only indicator we have so far is that Zelnick has said the price must feel “very reasonable,” but how much he considers reasonable is anyone’s guess. Nov. 19 cannot come soon enough.
