The multi-billion dollar Fast and Furious franchise started rather humbly 25 years ago with The Fast and the Furious, an action film about illegal street racing, an undercover cop with a crush, and a bunch of stolen DVD-VCR-combination television sets. For the franchise’s 25th anniversary, the original The Fast and the Furious movie is returning to theaters, giving fans a chance to relive the magic of early aughts Los Angeles car culture.
Director Rob Cohen’s franchise-fueling action flick will come back to movie theaters on Aug. 21 with The Fast And The Furious: 25th Anniversary rerelease, Universal Pictures announced Thursday. Tickets for the new screenings are available now via Fandango.
Here’s a surprisingly emotional trailer — this is a family film, of course — to get your feelings all NOS-ed up for The Fast And The Furious’ return:
The Fast and the Furious is the first part of the 10-film franchise (excluding Better Luck Tomorrow), and a box office success. It grossed more than $207 million in its initial theatrical run, and set the stage for a series of successful sequels. The franchise peaked commercially with 2015’s Furious 7, which ended its theatrical run with a $1.5 billion haul. The most recent entry in the franchise is 2023’s Fast X, which earned only half of what Furious 7 ended up with. Even still, anticipation is high for the 11th and supposedly final chapter in The Fast Saga, Fast Forever, which is scheduled for release on March 17, 2028.
But don’t worry, Fast fans: there’s more to come. Just last month, Dominic Toretto himself, Vin Diesel, announced that four TV shows in the Fast and Furious “universe” are being developed at Universal Television, including a live-action show heading to NBCUniversal’s Peacock.
If The Fast And The Furious: 25th Anniversary is your first F&F, here’s what you’re in for, according to the rerelease’s official description:
They’ve got the adrenaline rush and the mean machines, but most of all, they’ve got the extreme need for speed. On the turbo-charged streets of Los Angeles, every night is a championship race. With nitro-boosted fury, Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), rules the road turning all his challengers into dust. He and his rival, Johnny Tran (Rick Yune) are the boldest, the baddest and the best. But now, there’s new rage on the road. They know he’s tough, they know he’s fast, but what they don’t know is that he’s a speed demon detective (Paul Walker) with enough drive and determination to come out the winner. With intense full-throttle action, awesome high-speed stunts, and full-on pedal to the metal intensity, this fast and furious assault puts you in the driver’s seat and dares you to exceed all limits.
The other thing to know about Fast and Furious films is how often they end in cookouts featuring key members of the cast. Thus, we will send you off with a cookout (ranking). Salud.

Vin Diesel still doesn’t understand what makes Fast Five a perfect Fast & Furious movie
