The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 is almost here, and while we know guest stars like Wayne Brady and Kevin Michael Richardson are joining the cast, there are still some surprises on the way. On Wednesday, Critical Role announced the latest surprise addition to the animated series’ cast.
The Lord of the Rings legend Andy Serkis will voice a character in the upcoming season, Matt Mercer, Sam Riegel, and the rest of the Critical Role crew revealed in an Instagram video. Who will he be voicing? Critical Role wouldn’t say, letting fans guess in the lead-up to season 4’s premiere next week.
Serkis is best known for his role as Gollum in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings films. He’ll bring Gollum back to the big screen with 2027’s The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, which he’s directing. Serkis has also starred in The Batman, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and Black Panther. His latest film is Animal Farm, which he starred in, produced, and directed.
Critical Role’s Travis Willingham told Screen Rant that Serkis is someone they’ve had their eyes on “from the very beginning.” Willingham said, “[Serkis] has such an incredible range, and a way to deliver that just makes other things seem trivial. But when he really dives into his character stuff, it’s just so much fun. So it was just an honor and a joy to be able to work with Mr. Serkis.”
The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 takes place a year after season 3. Vox Machina defeated the Chroma Conclave and went their separate ways, but that doesn’t mean their adventures have ended (Not by a longshot!). The fourth season will introduce new foes and dangers, and the good guys may not even win, according to Riegel.
Season 4 of The Legend of Vox Machina premieres June 3 on Amazon Prime.
