Far Far West is shooting up the Steam charts

Far Far West, the multiplayer co-op cowboy-themed FPS (or cowbot, I suppose, since you play as a robot), has sold over one million units on Steam in under two weeks, according to a news release. This is despite being released in early access, and competing with some seriously high-profile games around the same period, including Subnautica 2, Forza Horizon 6, and Pragmata.

According to SteamDB, the concurrent player count hasn’t been anything to sniff at either, with an all-time peak of over 47,000. At the time of writing, it’s 18th in the bestsellers list, ahead of some massively popular games such as Slay the Spire 2, Battlefield 6, and just one place behind Crimson Desert.

It also boasts an “overwhelmingly positive” review score on Steam, and after spending over 20 hours in it since launch, I find it hard to disagree. Far Far West is so well-polished, it’s surprising that it’s in early access at all; once you complete every quest and find all the collectibles on each map, the content starts to run thin, but feature-wise, it’s pretty much complete. It could well be a full launch, with the usual post-launch seasonal support we see elsewhere in the industry.

If you’re a fan of games such as Deep Rock Galactic or Helldivers 2, Far Far West is essentially a mashup of the two. It features big maps to explore, enemies everywhere you look in the form of undead skeletons, and loads of weapons (and magic spells) to try out. It even has some roguelite elements in the form of jokers, which are run-specific buffs. With the right combination, you can become ridiculously overpowered… or if you get lucky, you can enable triple jump, triple dash, and essentially fly across the map.

The game doesn’t take itself too seriously, and as Polygon’s Josh Broadwell explains, the fact that its missions can be so short — or much longer, if you increase the difficulty and hunt for all the collectibles — enhances its staying power.
